The first track on the Pet Shop Boys' 1993 album Very is "Can You Forgive Her?", a synthpop song

The first track on the <a href="http://www.petshopboys.co.uk/">Pet Shop Boys</a>' 1993 album <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_(album)"><i>Very</i></a> is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can_You_Forgive_Her%3F_(song)">"Can You Forgive Her?"</a>, a synthpop song <a href="written in a sneaky-soundiny 6/8 time&lt;/a&gt; that is addressed to a young man who--as Tennant and Lowe &lt;a href=" http://www.lyricsdepot.com/pet-shop-boys/can-you-forgive-her.html"="http://www.lyricsdepot.com/pet-shop-boys/can-you-forgive-her.html&quot;">have it</a>--not only dances to disco and doesn't like rock, but also has some "youthful follies" and dreams of "changing teams." The song does hit a bit close to home, but it's a well-composed song and who am I to knock a <i>chanson bien faite</i> for being painfully true to life?

The Pet Shop Boys' <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_West_(song)#Pet_Shop_Boys_version">cover of "Go West"</a> is entirely different. I can only stand to listen to a couiple of minutes before I have to skip to another track, or do a quick search for another YouTube video.

<center><lj-embed id="62" /></center>

The Village People's original version was released in 1979, a <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/515578.stm">celebration of San Francisco's gay scene</a>, an arena for social liberalization and personal freedom that had appeared almost overnight in the decade after Stonewall. A few years later, scientists determined that in a 1978 cohort of gay and bisexual men, <a href="http://www.niaid.nih.gov/publications/hivaids/7.htm">4.5% were infected with HIV</a>, long before the <a href="http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/315/7123/1689">fatal starbursts</a> of the epidemic began to appear. It was absurd that people continents away could be infected with an obscure virus transmitted against the odds by a minor primate species, but it happened.

This version of "Go West" was born in the post-AIDS moment. The Pet Shop Boys first performed the song at an AIDS fundraising benefit, and after "Go West" is a hidden extra song that, as noted <a href="http://www.geowayne.com/psbvery.htm#go">here</a>, widely taken asw a dedication to a man believed to be Lowe's lover, himself dying of AIDS. Let's not forget that the song's title and chorus can be read not only as an invocation of the joys of west-coast North America, but as a reference to heading into <a href="http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/annielennox/intothewest.html">heading into the west</a>.

In the era of HAART, all that wouldn't be especially but or the fact that I know quite a few people who have been marked by that phase of the epidemic, infected and survivors and bystanders alike. I've finished researching that period in the library: I've got my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Band-Played-Politics-People-Epidemic/dp/0312241356">Randy Shilts</a> and my <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/AIDS-Activist-Michael-Politics-Community/dp/1896357733">Ann Silversides</a> and my <a href="http://books.google.ca/books?hl=en&amp;id=to_6KdWh07gC&amp;dq=ed+hooper+aids&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=web&amp;ots=JfP9ejur5v&amp;sig=ZGeCJsHCldkK4F8G0xQuwU1soxg">Edward Hooper</a> and too many others to name here all under my belt. I've just not raised the issue with them, or allowed the issue to be raised by them, at all. Best not to disturb long-buried pains.

I used to think that I didn't involve myself at all in this because I was polite. Lately, I've lately been thinking it's because I'm a bit of a coward. Hence, my reactino to this song.

[muziko |Mike Doughty - Real Love (in my head)]

I met a woman who runs a theater company, and read her manifesto on the company's Myspace page.

(I like to pronounce Myspace not MY-space, but rather My-SPACE)

She talked about how her goal is to make people uncomfortable, and how she tricks herself into beginning to write a play by trying to write the play she least wants to write. The latter seems like a good trick--maybe I should sit down and try to write a mainstream country song, or a string quartet, or a ballad in the style of "Memory" from Cats, as a means of getting something interesting to come out.

I read somewhere that some Beatles songs started out as them jamming a jokey take on some goofy genre--oompah or ragtime or reggae or something.

But making people uncomfortable? It sounds much more playful, and cheerful, when she describes it; juxtaposing, intoxicating, and thrilling. Not like the old joke about the guy who says, "Your play was boring," and the playwright says, "EXACTLY!" But what am I trying to do when I sit down to work? Move myself, make a connection between the song and myself. Is that enough? OK, I know, it's enough. But what am I doing? What am I trying to do?

Lynda Barry has a book on writing that I pre-ordered off Amazon, called What It Is--it looks like a great big collage/scrapbook/art project, and it has exercises about plumbing your memory, extracting details, finding very specific images from childhood. Sekou Sundiata always used to say, "You don't owe the facts anything." Meaning that you're not required as a writer to represent the complete and utter truth, when in fact you could put fiction into the events and find something more 'truthful' (unless yer James Frey, ahem).

The facts, the facts, the so-called facts. Seek the middle path.

Moncton Times & Transcript endorses George LeBlanc for Mayor of Moncton [2008-05-10 06:35]
briancormier
In a thoughtful editorial published today, the Moncton Times & Transcript endorsed George LeBlanc as the logical choice for Mayor of Moncton when citizens go to the polls on Monday:

Our choice for Moncton's mayor
Published Saturday May 10, 2008
Moncton Times & Transcript

There appears to be a mood and wish for change in the municipal government in Moncton this year, something reflected in the number of good candidates for council seats, and also in the race for mayor between two credible contenders, George LeBlanc and Pierre Michaud.

There are several important issues residents would like to see moved forward or acted upon, including the development of the downtown which has largely stalled for the past four years. The city has to figure out exactly what it wants downtown and then move ahead with its decision.

Environmental and quality of life concerns continue. Codiac Transit needs to be improved, our airport needs more customs service, and there remain questions about city hall staff, transparency and taxation to address.

We have been impressed by the campaigns of both Mr. LeBlanc and Mr. Michaud and believe that no matter who wins, both have a lot to contribute to the city and we encourage them do do so. Only one can be mayor, however, and our choice at this time in the city's history is George LeBlanc.

Mr. LeBlanc has not only experience on council and dealing with city staff, but his track record while on council was impressive. This alone gives him the edge over Mr. Michaud.

We have been impressed with the tremendous amount of thought Mr. LeBlanc has put into his platform, which is outlined in his seven-page "Action Plan." It is a comprehensive, detailed, clear and concise outline of the major issues and where he stands. It heralds a fresh start for the city and the council.

One big issue is accountability and openness at city hall and by council, something on which LeBlanc has a good record. The public first became aware of the sale of a piece of Mapleton Park after Mr. LeBlanc, at the time not on council, raised the alarm. Council had done the deal in such a way the public was in the dark, even after it was approved in open council! There was no public consultation. Mr. LeBlanc is able to ensure this kind of thing does not happen again.

He also intends to review staffing, and again he is correct. Has the bureaucracy been allowed to grow like a weed garden? There is considerable evidence it has. Is this why the council didn't think it could afford tax cuts? Perhaps. Mr. LeBlanc wants to find out. On taxation, Mr. LeBlanc knows the importance of lower taxes and is prepared to try to get there. He also, refreshingly, intends to meet with the province and premier to try to work out a deal to ease the pain of escalating property assessments. No buck passing there!

These things are illustrative of Mr. LeBlanc's approach. Combined with his experience, it makes Mr. LeBlanc the most prepared and logical choice.

Idol Chatter for May 8, 2008: "Who'll make it to the Top 3?" [2008-05-08 10:32]

Last night, a member of the Top 4 was sent home, giving us a new Top 3 who will go on to compete next week and determine who will be in the finale the following week.

In 2002, 2004 and 2006, the Top 4 elimination show brought shocker eliminations. This being 2008, I was expecting that this two-year "curse" could be repeated. Was it? Did David Cook or David Archuleta get the boot? Have you looked outside today and there are riots on the streets? *wink* Was it Jason who went home, as everyone predicted? Or was Syesha finally sent packing after landing in the bottom two or three several times this season?

If you want a job, try to at least be presentable [2008-05-08 10:27]

Hump Day
Moncton Times & Transcript
Wednesday, May 7, 2008
Page D6

If you can't find a job, listen up! There are jobs aplenty!

Recently, every senior person in my office was headhunted by job recruiters on the same day. With a shortage of talent available in the province and an exodus of workers out west to take advantage of the oil boom, employers in this part of the country have been left scrambling for staff, be they senior, junior or even entry level.

The good news is that if you're unemployed, you won't be for long if you have two bits of sense in you. Got a pulse? Can you count to 10? OK... we're desperate... can you count to five? Yes? You're hired!

But the bad news is that job seekers have become so sloppy that some don't even appear to care how they present themselves. They know that some employers are so desperate that they're willing to overlook nearly every red flag short of a life sentence in prison for sleigh-jacking Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. In this day and age, employers can no longer afford to be fussy.

Recently, I was part of a job competition process for a non-profit organization I'm involved with. We're hiring someone for senior-level administrative work. Out of two rounds of advertising, we received about 40 applications. We asked for three simple things: a cover letter, salary expectations and a resume.

At least 90 per cent of applicants failed to apply properly. While everyone submitted a resume and most submitted a letter, the vast majority failed to disclose salary expectations. While I realize that this is the "nightmare" question, it's asked simply to see if you're in the range. If you're lower than what the salary really is, it doesn't mean that the salary will be decreased. It simply means that you'll likely be screened in because you're not asking (and expecting) a lot more than the employer has budgeted.

In turn, if everyone who submits salary expectations is above what the employer is willing to pay, then the employer has two options: either raise the salary to something more appropriate for the job or reduce the qualifications and find someone more "junior".

It was simply baffling to me to see the individuals applying for this position just willy-nilly ignore what was in the job ad. I mean, really... What were they thinking? We were hiring someone for a relatively senior position to do very serious and demanding administrative work and you expected an interview when you couldn't even follow the simplest of instructions? Letter... salary expectations... resume. That's not that complicated. Really, it's not.

It's not as if we asked for Colonel Sanders' secret KFC recipe or how they get the caramel in the Caramilk bar, right?

I was also involved in job interviews recently for another position within the same organization. Once again, what I saw was not promising for employers.

People arrived scruffy, wearing sunglasses on their head and carrying cups of coffee... to a job interview!

Apparently, gone are the days when people would at least try to look presentable. The job being filled wasn't glamorous by any means, but one guy showed up so rough looking that I was half wondering whether or not he'd just been released from the drunk tank. Like I said, the job wasn't fancy and the chances of Queen Elizabeth calling for strategic constitutional advice were pretty slim, but he could have at least run a comb through his hair.

What's an employer to do? I guess that if you pay enough, the people will flock to you. With that said, what are non-profits to do, especially those who usually can't afford to pay top wages, relying on their employees' sense of accomplishment to fill a void that money can't fill?

It must be tough for some employers. People who normally would not have lasted a day in the job 10 years ago are being kept out of desperation. I went to a major department store a few days ago and was served by a human version of a snail. This cashier was so slow that I'm pretty sure I saw the clock going backwards. The two-year-old kid in back of me with his mother hit puberty, earned two university degrees and raised a family before they even made it to the cashier to pay for his candy.

For someone with little patience like me, I found this to be excruciating. I almost felt like I was on Candid Camera. That's how bad it was. But I bet you that the cashier will still be there six months from now because they're so desperate for staff that even poor performers are kept on. A slow cashier or no cashier at all? If I owned a business, the snail would get the job.

I've been unemployed in a bad job market. It's no fun... no fun at all. But I remember spiffying myself up to go meet employers and shovelling out the ears to ensure I could hear everything correctly during the interview. It should still be that way. I don't expect someone to show up in a tuxedo, but for heaven's sakes at least try to make the tiniest effort to make a good impression, would you?

A good first impression is always something to strive for, so leave your sunglasses off your head, leave the cup of coffee in the car, run a comb through your hair and get rid of the beard stubble. (This is especially important for female job applicants.)

Remember, folks, I'll be watching!

Any of you cats have older iPods you don't use anymore and would be willing to trade for shirts and hoodies and such? (I even have a couple secret wooden robots stashed away. I've also got some secret icon grid shirts I could draw on and make you a handmade piece of BW pixel artwork)

They don't need to be perfect or new- simply capable of disk mode, not exhibiting internal damage and greater than 4 gigs in size. Firewire-capable ones are preferred but it's not required. Color and model are unimportant.

(I'm specifically looking for iPods as opposed to other brands, as I understand the drivers and basic repair on them.)

Basically, I'm looking to add a cheap layer of extra backups to the five or so computers we use at work. This seems like a nice ghetto internet recycle-y way to do that! If too many people have them and you want to trade among yourselves as well, please do.

As in "screw up". I know I shouldn't be so negative, because it only invites more negativity and disappointment, but I tell it how it is, 'cause that's how I roll.

Yup, I kinda' screwed everything up this. None of the few goals I had set for myself were accomplished: not the one about the thesis, or the one about speeding up my reading to 1200 wods per minute, or the one about finishing up my apprenticeship programs.

I promised my promoter I would have the theory chapter of my thesis up and running by the 14th, but I dawdled to much on it, due to the flu (which shouldn't have stopped me) and bad habits. I still can't bring myself to talk to my career counselor about my apprenticeships and it seems I will be doing everything over the summer break. I'm still gonna' take a break in July for Anna, but August will be a sad month.

Basically, what wories me most is the fact I will have to defend my thesis in September and by that time many schools will have filled their MA program quotas. Not that I have a wide selection: seems my university will only allow me to gaduate to a small handful of schools, most of which are private and fo which you pay through the nose.

And I'm getting tired of paying for education in school's with little to no recognition. I am getting great practical skills, but I'm afraid many less skilled graduates of more prestigous universities will be picked over me. I know I will land a job anyway: I'm just that good a translator, but not in the same pay bracket as an MA would get, at least initially.

Also, there is still the question of army service. I'm still of eligible draft age and to those of you who don't know the Polish system: if you're under a certain age and not studying, you are required by law to undergo compulsory, six month army training. Then again, there are a couple ways around and I won't be the first draft dodger in Polish history. I just need to evade this thing for two more years, when they'll introduce a professional standing army.

So, now you have it. My situation in a nutshell. I will spare you details of deteriorating health, dropping weight and debilitating mood swings. Basically...

Basically.

Don't worry, everybody. I did come up with a plan B, I always come up with a plan B. It's just I'm so tired of having to fall back on them.

In cooler news...

I will be going to a convention in Sosnowiec at the beginning of June, if Cthulhu be willin'. Filip invited me to go with him: he in turn will be helping his old high school buddy to promote the self published comic he made after dropping out of Far Eastern Studies. The comic is supposed to be the launching pad for a pen and paper roleplaying game he is developing and it shows: the thing is focused more on the world than on the story. I don't find that very appealing, but hey - I'm just one guy. I still believe he would do better if he tried to make a comic-comic, not a promo-comic.

To finish this post, check out the awesome AMV under the cut. Great montage, great synchro, great music. Eurobeat FTW!

Help!! I have a student that uses a Springboard. The classroom teacher asked me to program some more things onto it. I have some training on it but I can't seem to save the page that I am creating. If there's anyone on here that  can go step by step and explain how to create and save everything it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

***gasp!***

Just came home and discovered a huge gourmet fruit basket awaiting me and the kids. Complete with chocolate-dipped apple slices and melon-centered pineapple flowers. Wow!

A Mother's Day present from my aunt in Florida who wrote a very forlorn e-mail to me yesterday about how her own two kids had chosen to spend Mother's Day this year with their in-laws. I called this morning to tell her how loved she was by her NYC niece. And now a mound o'fruit. Wow.

I guess we all just need a huge scoop of gooey love every now and again.
