Doom lives on! [2008-05-08 14:48]
Doom 4 was announced yesterday.

Doom II was the classic first-person shooter game we played in grade 10, a mix of demonic and almost Lovecraftian horror. Our school had a "computer users student organization" that would meet during lunch time, but all we did was play Doom II on the school's LAN. Up to 16 people in deathmatch! So we nicknamed it the "Doom student organization".

Many of us still play Doom II online for free using Zdaemon. I particularly enjoy the coop mode where 16 people can work together to shoot down the demons and complete a level!

Let's not forget Doom, the Roguelike for and even olderskool, rich ASCII experience!

Check out this home-made plush cacodemon!

Lesbians [2008-05-01 10:09]
Lesbians with a big L (the inhabitants of the Greek island of Lesbos) want lesbians with a small L (gay women around the world) to stop hijacking their word and disgracing the name of their island. The Greek government is so embarrassed by the term that it has renamed the island after its capital, Mytilini. (BBC News)

Personally, I'd be proud if my island was known worldwide because of a famous local poet. (Although, whether Sappho herself was a lesbian is also subject to debate. If not Sappho, I wonder who is the first explicitly lesbian woman recorded in history...)

Team Fortress 2 [2008-04-30 18:50]
Team Fortress 2 is going to be free on Steam all weekend! (nromally $30 to buy on Steam)

It's an awesome and cute cooperative 1st person shooter game that resembles rock, paper, scissors on steroids! There are also many support roles like medics and engineers if you're not the type to go pew pew pew in the front lines. Watch the trailers!

TTC strike [2008-04-26 16:58]
[humoro |Watching the drama unfold]

I personally support transit workers' right to strike, but like kids on the Internets would say, "ur doin it wrong". The biggest error they made was in striking with only 30 minute notice on Friday at midnight. Women and elderly people were left stranded across the city at night with no ride to come back home late Friday night. "We're serious about your safety." Suuuuuurrre.

They said that the reason they didn't give 48-hour notice was to avoid TTC staff getting abused and heckled by riders in those last two days. But guess what, now people will be 100 times more pissed off and abusive! Torontonians are pissed off and vandalizing TTC property.

photo of graffitti on Spadina station outside wall, reading: The strike sucks!

I feel like walking around in the street wearing a TTC uniform to see what kind of abuse people would hurl at me. Make a documentary. ;)

Canada's Olympics protest hypocrisy [2008-04-17 14:29]
It's sad that the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are all "Aboriginal-themed" with logos and mascots culturally appropriated from various aboriginal beliefs and practices, while the actual Native people see the event as a target for protest. Meanwhile, white Canadians are more interested in the plight of the Tibetans against evil China on the other side of the planet.

Building anti-oppression and sex-positive communities for people with disabilities [2008-04-16 13:56]
I just finished a major update and revamp of the Acsexxxable Working Group website, for which I am the volunteer web editor.

Minor fixes to do:
-In Internet Explorer, the black line is too high. It should line up with the bottom of the blue navigation tabs. Works perfectly in Firefox.
-Make the dildo blue like the navigation tabs. (Thanks, [info]darkdragondm!)
-Create a web form on the contact us page for people who don't have an e-mail client, e.g. in a library, etc.

If you know how to fix these or catch anything else to improve, please let me know!

Can you think of other quick aid sheets that would come in extremely handy to a student learning French?

Regional products you thought were more widespread [2008-04-09 09:22]
Shreddies cereal boxbag of Lay's ketchup chips When I was explaining to an online American friend that I had a dream I was eating Shreddies, I was surprised that he didn't know what Shreddies were. I just assumed they were an American breakfast cereal like the so many other American products Canadians use every day. Turns out it's a Commonwealth thing. Americans don't have it!

I read in someone else's blog recently about ketchup chips. Apparently they're very Canadian and is not available in many American corner stores! I always assumed ketchup was just a basic flavour common among chip (or crisp) eaters worldwide.

what Americans call Smarties
One I discovered a few years ago is Smarties, another Commonwealth product that doesn't exist in the US. They only have M&Ms, which are sort of similar. But they do have a product called Smarties, which we know as Rockets.

Are there any products you always assumed were widespread and later discovered were regional only to where you lived? Something you were surprised that somebody from a similar country never heard of.

Photoshop? [2008-04-08 01:08]
Can one of you Photoshop gurus convert these two images to clean and good-looking 16 by 16 icons? One of them is already square proportions, but the other one will have to be squished to force it to 16 to 16.

I've tried myself, but I can't get them to look clear and right when reduced to 16 by 16.

Bedtime theme song? [2008-04-04 13:10]
What are your favourite songs on the theme of rest, relaxation, sleep, dreaming or bedtime?

I want to use conditioning methods to associate a certain song to me going to bed, do exercises to reenforce it, then use that in the evening as a signal to get off computer and go relax in bed to watch TV or do something relaxing, preparing for sleep to come. Otherwise I have trouble changing gears and will carry on doing my computer activity all night long and screw up my sleep pattern again.

Get ready for LULZ! Jetzt geht's looos! [2008-03-26 20:04]
Wow, today is my lucky comedy day!!

-New Angry Video Game Nerd, about the worst games on Intellivision.
-New Têtes à claques about Quebeckers in Jamaica. (This series is in very Québécois French, but their DVD has English and Standard French subtitle options.) It's a funny episode to me, because southeast New Brunswick (where I grew up) is also a location where we had many annoying Quebeckers in Speedos on our beaches.

And tonight:

-New South Park episode, a tribute to the Heavy Metal comic or movie. Looks trippy, and I'm glad Kenny will be the main character! I find him underused. (irc://irc.tveps.net/southpark-episodes)

What's with the mass hysteria that White people have over the seal hunt?! Now the EU is even considering taking measures against Canada.

If you're on Facialbook, I recommend this seal hunt group from the Inuit perspective. I like this poster, that shows a mirror on White people's behaviour against responsible seal hunters.
